Michael Ha nake meets th e Blair Witch Project in Kim Gok& #39;s Exhausted , a viciou s kick in the pants to e veryone i n the audie nce, all in the nam e of "style." A man me ets a mute wom an, an d as any re asonable person would do in s uch a situat ion, makes h er his pr ostitute. But the pimping is the le ast of o ur problem s. As we get ex hausted by the grai ny faux-16m m camerawor k, the film g ets increasingl y deranged. Th e closest thi ng we get to a sympathetic c haracter is the pimp , simply because h e's got too much self- respect to fuc k a mute whore. Everyone else is either a go ry mess, or a gory mess in disgui se. Eve n the pros titute, which even a thug l ike Lars von Trier would ma ke like able, come s off as a delirious s cary wom an whose shrieks strik e like blows to t he jugula r. Kim Gok has seemin gly abandoned the Mar xist critiques of his short films, going i nstead for mindle ss brutality which c ulminates i n an endless bl oody fre ak-show involving , among other things, a pai r of scissors going where p airs of sciss ors should not go. In the middle of t he bloodba th, we get an extended long take of the beat en prostitute&# 39;s ne ar-dead f ace, but it does not e licit sympath y or pity. In fact , images of the vic tim only make us shy away in shock. (Indeed, the extended sequence l ed to continuou s walk-outs during the Pusa n screenin g.) The long ta ke invites us to stare, but it assum es we' ;re as sadi stic as the v ictimize r (and the film) is. Meanwhile the sound-effects (mostl y a rumb ling bas sline that s hakes the theater ) pulsates with pure wicke dness. Wi th Hanake, s hock crea tes reflectio n, which asks that we be critical . Here, we onl y want to escape. I s uppose Exhausted h as some virtu es; the shots of drilling machines and f actories pr ovide a mesmer izing phal lic bac kdrop to th e pimp an d prostitute&# 39;s pursuits .
